Terms of Service

1. The service

The App is a chess tactics puzzle trainer. Puzzles are sourced from the Lichess open puzzle database (released by Lichess under a CC0 public-domain license) and re-analyzed by our own tagging pipeline — we don't use Lichess's own puzzle themes or ratings for tagging, only the raw position/move data. The App tracks your solving rating, lets you filter puzzles by tactic/phase/piece/ELO, and (optionally) lets you import your existing puzzle history from a linked Lichess account.

The App is a solo, hobby-scale project. It is not a professional coaching service and does not provide financial, medical, or professional advice of any kind (obviously — it's chess puzzles).

2. Eligibility and accounts

• You must be capable of forming a binding contract under Australian law to use the App. If you're under 18, you should have a parent or guardian's permission.
• An account is required to use the App — there's no anonymous/guest mode by design. You're responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials secure and for all activity under your account.
• One account per person. Provide accurate information when creating an account.
• We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, misuse the service, or attempt to abuse or overload our infrastructure.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Automate, scrape, or bulk-extract data from the App's API beyond normal interactive use.
• Attempt to circumvent, reverse-engineer, or interfere with the puzzle selection, rating, or authentication systems.
• Use the App for any unlawful purpose, or in a way that could damage, disable, or impair it for other users.
• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the App, its backend infrastructure, or other users' accounts/data.

4. Intellectual property

• The underlying puzzle positions/moves originate from Lichess's CC0-licensed public puzzle database. The tags, motifs, difficulty analysis, and other metadata attached to each puzzle are generated by our own analysis pipeline and are our work product.
• The App's software, design, and branding (excluding vendored third-party components) belong to us. Third-party components used under their own open-source licenses (chess.js, Lucide icons, Geist fonts, and others) are listed in vendor/README.md and remain the property of their respective authors.
• You're granted a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the App for its intended purpose. You may not copy, redistribute, or create derivative works from the App itself.

5. Third-party services

Certain features rely on third-party services with their own terms: Lichess.org (if you link an account), and Apple/Google (if you use their sign-in options). We're not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or practices of these third-party services.

6. Fees

The App is currently free to use, with no in-app purchases or subscriptions. We may introduce optional paid features in the future; if we do, we'll update these Terms and give you clear notice before any such feature is introduced, and existing free functionality won't be retroactively locked behind a paywall without notice.

7. Disclaimer of warranties

The App is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including as to accuracy, reliability, or uninterrupted availability. As a solo-maintained project, we don't guarantee any particular level of uptime, response time, or bug-free operation.

Nothing in these Terms excludes, restricts, or modifies any consumer guarantee, right, or remedy under the Australian Consumer Law (or any other law) that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted, or modified. Where our liability can lawfully be limited, it is limited to re-supplying the service.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, and subject to §7, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss arising from your use of the App.

9. Termination

You may stop using the App and delete your account at any time (Settings → Delete Account), which permanently removes your data per the Privacy Policy. We may suspend or terminate your access for violating these Terms, with notice where reasonably practicable.

10. Changes

We may modify these Terms or the App itself (including discontinuing features) at any time, given the project's hobby scale. We'll provide reasonable notice of material changes to these Terms within the App or via the "Last updated" date above. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated Terms.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia, and any disputes are subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of that jurisdiction.
